The goal of this study is to describe the social networks of Latino immigrants (n=80) in New York City, and how various network features are linked with dietary quality and food insecurity. Participants had higher Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scores if their social networks were more transitive (β = 6.11, <0.

Cancer is pervasive across multicellular species, but what explains the differences in cancer prevalence across species? Using 16,049 necropsy records for 292 species spanning three clades of tetrapods (amphibians, sauropsids, and mammals), we found that neoplasia and malignancy prevalence increases with adult mass (contrary to Peto's paradox) and somatic mutation rate but decreases with gestation time. The relationship between adult mass and malignancy prevalence was only apparent when we controlled for gestation time. Evolution of cancer susceptibility appears to have undergone sudden shifts followed by stabilizing selection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the effectiveness of the Apple Watch® in measuring transcutaneous oxygen saturation in children with cyanotic heart disease during a six-minute walk test.
  • Results showed that the Apple Watch® successfully measured saturation in most children, but was only reliable for those with higher saturation levels (above 85%).
  • The findings suggest using the Apple Watch® for monitoring oxygen saturation in children with mild cyanosis, but it is not recommended for those with moderate or severe cyanosis due to unreliable results.

Background And Objectives: Cancer is a disease that affects nearly all multicellular life, including the broad and diverse taxa of Aves. While little is known about the factors that contribute to cancer risk across Aves, life history trade-offs may explain some of this variability in cancer prevalence. We predict birds with high investment in reproduction may have a higher likelihood of developing cancer.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is becoming more relevant for medical diagnostics, especially for using cell-free DNA to monitor response to therapy in cancer management, as high sensitivity of NGS enables detection of rare events. Sequencing Library preparation is a time-consuming and complex process, and large-scale liquid handlers are often used for automation. However, for smaller labs and low-to-medium throughput samples, these liquid handlers are expensive and need experts for handling.
