Fission-fusion social systems allow individuals to make flexible choices about where, with whom, and in what contexts to spend their time in response to competing social and ecological pressures. The ability for fission-fusion societies to support individual behavioral strategies that vary across contexts has been suggested, but the potential function of such context-specific social choices remains largely understudied. We adopted the concept of social niche construction to explore possible differences in social complexity at the individual and group level across feeding contexts.

While there is growing recognition of the importance of traditional knowledge in science, these perspectives remain underrepresented in research publications. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a method to quantitate the veterinary sedative xylazine as well as 4-anilino-N-phenethylpiperidine (4-ANPP), acetyl fentanyl, fentanyl, norfentanyl, and p-fluorofentanyl in blood utilizing liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. This method also qualitatively monitors for the presence of o-fluorofentanyl and m-fluorofentanyl isomers. UCT Clean Screen® DAU extraction columns were utilized to isolate the analytes in postmortem blood samples.

Socioecological factors influencing intraspecific variation in ranging dynamics of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in Ndoki Forest.

Ranging dynamics are physical and behavioral representations of how different socioecological factors affect an organism's spatial decisions and space use strategies. Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) are a model species to investigate the drivers of spatial dynamics based on both the natural variation in socioecological factors within the species and compared with their mountain gorilla counterparts. In this study, we evaluate the influences of resource seasonality and social dynamics on variation in home range size, utilization, and intergroup overlap among multiple gorilla groups over an 8-year study period in the northern Republic of Congo.
