A 22-year-old woman was bitten on the third finger of her left hand by a Walterinnesia aegyptia (desert black cobra). Local signs included a marked swelling of the entire hand with pain along the left upper limb. Systemic reactions were irritability, fever, tachycardia, ventricular premature beats, nausea and high blood leukocytes count.

All 40 patients survived hospitalization and underwent a follow-up examination one month later. Serum IL-1beta and IL-6 levels were determined by the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) method using commercial kits.

Sympathectomy reduced in vitro proliferation to concanavalin A (ConA) by LN cells and decreased LN Thy-1+ and CD4+ T cells. At the same time, ConA-induced interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) production was increased, but interleukin-2 (IL-2) production was not altered.
