Acute kidney injury after lung transplantation, incidence, risk factors, and effects: A Swedish nationwide study.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious complication after lung transplantation, but the reported incidence varies in the literature. No data on AKI have been published from the Swedish lung transplantation program.

Methods: The aim of our study was to investigate the incidence, perioperative risk factors, and effects of early postoperative acute kidney injury (Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes [KDIGO] criteria) after lung transplantation.

Background: Lung transplantation remains hampered by a scarcity of viable donor lungs, partially attributed to donor lung injuries.

Methods: Three porcine lung injury models were studied: infection-induced using lipopolysaccharide (n = 7), aspiration-induced using endotracheal gastric content (n = 7), and injury using lavage and harmful ventilation (ventilator-induced lung injury; n = 7). Molecular and functional changes from before and after the establishment of lung injury were examined with histopathology, immunohistochemistry, cytokine levels, hemodynamics, and mass spectrometric analysis of lung tissue.

Direct-acting oral anticoagulant removal by intraoperative hemoadsorption in CABG and/or single valve surgery: interim analysis of the International Safe and Timely Antithrombotic Removal (STAR) registry.

Objective: Patients on direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are at high risk of perioperative bleeding complications. Intraoperative hemoadsorption is a novel strategy to reduce perioperative bleeding in patients on DOACs undergoing non-deferable cardiac surgery. The international STAR-registry reports real-world clinical outcomes associated with this application.
