Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL, Hermetia illucens) contain high amounts of proteins and essential amino acids and are therefore an appropriate feed source. However, they lack essential fatty acids (FAs), specifically ω-3 and ω-6, making them a less desirable feed choice for aquaculture. The aim of this study was to increase the ω-3 and ω-6 FA concentrations in BSFL by manipulating the FA composition in their rearing substrate.

Abnormal calcium signaling is a central pathological component of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we describe the identification of a class of compounds called ReS19-T, which are able to restore calcium homeostasis in cell-based models of tau pathology. Aberrant tau accumulation leads to uncontrolled activation of store-operated calcium channels (SOCCs) by remodeling septin filaments at the cell cortex.

The analysis of heroin samples, before use in the protected environment of user centra, could be a supplementary service in the context of harm reduction. Infrared spectroscopy hyphenated with multivariate calibration could be a valuable asset in this context, and therefore 125 heroin samples were collected directly from users and analysed with classical chromatographic techniques. Further, Mid-Infrared spectra were collected for all samples, to be used in Partial Least Squares (PLS) modelling, in order to obtain qualitative and quantitative models based on real live samples.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed mercury (Hg) levels in sediment porewaters and solid phases using both conventional and passive sampling methods in the polluted Scheldt Estuary and Belgian Coastal Zone (BCZ).
  • - Findings revealed that labile Hg concentrations measured by Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) were generally lower than those in porewater, with various vertical distribution patterns observed, while sediment solid phases still contained high Hg levels.
  • - The research highlighted the influence of organic matter in controlling Hg movement between solid phases and porewater, and suggested that the DGT method effectively measures bioavailable Hg and can model its release from sediments.

Introduction: Prediction models for identifying emergency department (ED) patients at high risk of poor outcome are often not externally validated. We aimed to perform a head-to-head comparison of the discriminatory performance of several prediction models in a large cohort of ED patients.

Methods: In this retrospective study, we selected prediction models that aim to predict poor outcome and we included adult medical ED patients.
