Background: A fundamental property of cancer cells is their metabolic reprogramming, allowing them to increase glucose uptake and glycolysis. Using a rat colon adenocarcinoma model, we previously showed that blood levels of free methylglyoxal (MG), a side-product of glycolysis, remained normal in animals grafted with a non-growing tumor cell clone, while MG levels were significantly increased and positively correlated with tumor growth in animals grafted with a tumorigenic cell clone issued from the same tumor.

Methods: We measured free MG in the blood of cancerous non-diabetic patients and compared the results to healthy subjects and non-cancerous diabetic patients.

Three-dimensional (3D) cancer models, such as multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTS), are biological supports used for research in oncology, drug development and nanotoxicity assays. However, due to various analytical and biological challenges, the main recurring problem faced when developing this type of 3D model is the lack of reproducibility. When using a 3D support to assess the effect of biologics, small molecules or nanoparticles, it is essential that the support remains constant over time and multiples productions.

Background: Six thoracic pathologists reviewed 259 lung neuroendocrine tumours (LNETs) from the lungNENomics project, with 171 of them having associated survival data. This cohort presents a unique opportunity to assess the strengths and limitations of current World Health Organization (WHO) classification criteria and to evaluate the utility of emerging markers.

A current challenge in silicon chemistry is to perform liquid-phase synthesis of silicon nanoparticles, which would permit the use of colloidal synthesis techniques to control size and shape. Herein we show how silicon nanoparticles were synthesized at ambient temperature and pressure in organic solvents through a redox reaction. Specifically, a hexacoordinated silicon complex, bis(,'-diisopropylbutylamidinato)dichlorosilane, was reduced by a silicon Zintl phase, sodium silicide (NaSi).
