Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effectiveness of desmoplastic stromal reaction as a marker for nodal metastases in sporadic medullary thyroid carcinoma, questioning the reliance on basal calcitonin levels for surgical decisions.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 246 cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma, finding that both desmoplastic stromal reaction positivity and high basal calcitonin levels (>113 pg/mL) were significant independent risk factors for nodal metastases.
  • The results indicate that patients with minimal desmoplastic stromal reaction might not need extensive neck surgeries, while those with significant markers should strongly consider undergoing lateral neck dissection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how visuospatial attention is organized, highlighting a central focus of enhancement surrounded by a narrow zone that suppresses nearby stimuli to improve focus on relevant information.
  • Researchers used transcranial magnetic stimulation to target two brain areas (frontal eye field and intraparietal sulcus) to see how they influence this attention profile during psychophysical tasks, assessing both the right and left hemispheres.
  • Results revealed that stimulating the right hemisphere's frontal eye field and intraparietal sulcus increased the size of the inhibitory zone, while left hemisphere stimulation affected performance but did not change the attention profile, indicating the right dorsal attention network's key role in managing distractions.

According to embodied cognition research, one's bodily self-perception can be illusory and temporarily shifted toward an external body. Similarly, the so-called "enfacement illusion" induced with a synchronous multisensory stimulation over the self-face and an external face can result in implicit and explicit changes in the bodily self. The present study aimed to verify (i) the possibility of eliciting an enfacement illusion over computer-generated faces and (ii) which multisensory stimulation condition was more effective.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the Neonatal Assessment Manual scorE (NAME) and newborns' clinical condition on a large number of infants. The NAME model was developed as an instrument to assess the infant's general conditions, especially in NICUs, by evaluating how the infant's body responds to an external stressor such as static touch. Previous studies, employing experienced assessors, showed good validity indices as well as high inter-rater reliability.
