Arthropods and especially scorpions often use metal ions to harden their cuticle. In this study we analyse the chitin fibre arrangement, metal content and distribution and mechanical properties of the stingers of two scorpions: the buthid scorpion Centruroides platnicki (PS) and the diplocentrid scorpion Nebo whitei (NS). Results show that both scorpions incorporate the same elements, Zn, Mn and Ca, but in different locations in the stinger cuticle.

Background: Tracheomalacia (TM) is common in infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and associated with respiratory morbidity. Assessment of TM was historically via bronchoscopy, but recent studies demonstrate that ultrashort echo-time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can accurately assess TM in neonates.

Research Question: Do neonates with MRI-identified TM and BPD have increased respiratory morbidity through age 2 years?

Methods: We performed an observational cohort study of 54 subjects with BPD and assessed TM using UTE MRI at term-equivalent age.

Thin film nanoindentation has increased interest due to its usage in various applications. It is virtually impossible to measure thin film elastic modulus without the substrate influence. Several different methods exist to obtain the true thin film's elastic modulus with no attention given to investigate what parameters can improve insight into thin film mechanical property measurement.

Article Synopsis
  • This case series examines airway management outcomes, including reconstruction efforts, in 6 patients with campomelic dysplasia who faced severe airway obstructions leading to tracheostomy and reliance on ventilators.!* -
  • The average age of participants was 19.4 years, with a mean follow-up of 12.2 years; results showed that 4 patients underwent successful airway reconstruction and were able to be decannulated.!* -
  • The study highlights that while campomelic dysplasia was once seen as a life-threatening condition, successful airway management can lead to improved survival rates and quality of life for affected individuals into adulthood.!*
