Winter oilseed rape (WOSR, L.) is the third largest oil crop worldwide that also provides a source of high quality plant-based proteins. Nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) play a key role in plant growth.

Oilseed rape faces many challenges, especially at the beginning of its developmental cycle. Achieving rapid and uniform seed germination could help to ensure a successful establishment and therefore enabling the crop to compete with weeds and tolerate stresses during the earliest developmental stages.

Two recent papers shed light on how this might be achieved - via the transcriptional induction of DNA repair genes, the induction of a radioprotective DNA-binding protein, and possibly also the heightened capacity of repair proteins.
