Background: Drug-resistant tuberculosis is a growing public health threat, and early characterization of the resistance phenotype is essential for guiding treatment and mitigating the high mortality associated with the disease. However, the slow growth rate of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, necessitates several weeks for conventional culture-dependent drug susceptibility testing (DST). In addition, there are no widely available molecular diagnostic assays for evaluating resistance to newer tuberculosis drugs or drugs with complex resistance mechanisms.

Among the foodborne illnesses, listeriosis has the third highest case mortality rate (20-30% or higher). Emerging drug-resistant strains of , a causative bacterium of listeriosis, exacerbate the seriousness of this public health concern. Novel anti-Listerial compounds are therefore needed to combat this challenge.

Early detection of TB drug resistance coupled with therapeutic decision making guided by rapid characterisation of pre-treatment and treatment emergent resistance remains the most effective strategy for averting Drug-Resistant TB (DR-TB) transmission, reducing DR-TB associated mortality, and improving patient outcomes. Solid- and liquid-based mycobacterial culture methods remain the gold standard for (MTB) detection and drug susceptibility testing (DST).

This study aimed to isolate marine actinomycetes from South Africa, evaluate their in vitro antimicrobial activity against and Shiga toxin-producing , and characterize their mechanisms of action. Marine actinomycetes were isolated and identified by 16S rRNA sequencing.

Drawing on data from individual interviews and a workshop with young migrants aged 16-24 years old in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, we use uncertainty as a theoretical lens, to illustrate the ways in which young migrants' experiences provide meaning for them and give them an opportunity to assess, and plan for better opportunities despite the stark outlook. Thematic analysis was used to examine the multidimensionality of socio-spatial identities in young migrants.
