Article Synopsis
  • Many experimental setups in quantum science rely on laser fields for controlling states, but this control can suffer from issues related to optical phase noise.
  • Researchers introduced an optical feedforward technique to minimize laser phase noise during the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage for transferring ultracold RbCs molecules.
  • After conducting over 100 transfers on individual molecules, they achieved a notable transfer efficiency of 98.7(1)%, which is primarily constrained by the intensity of the lasers used.

Firefighters operating in hot environments face challenges from protective garments that restrict heat dissipation, resulting in increased core temperature, thermal discomfort, and performance decline. Cooling vests represent a viable solution. The study aim was to compare effectiveness of the same amount of cooling power to the upper body (UB) or whole body (WB) in alleviating thermoregulatory and physiological stress, enhancing cognitive function, and reducing ratings of thermal discomfort and exertion, during 60 min of exercise in a hot environment (40°C, 40% relative humidity) while wearing firefighter turnout gear.

Skeletal muscle plays an integral role in locomotion, but also as part of the integrative physiological system. Recent progress has identified crosstalk between skeletal muscle and various physiological systems, including the immune system. Both the musculoskeletal and immune systems are impacted by aging.

Griffith Pugh, MD (1909-1994), was a pioneer in altitude physiology. During World War II, he developed training protocols in Lebanon to improve soldier performance at altitude and in the cold. In 1951 he was chosen to join the British Everest team as a scientist.
