Objective: The cumulative effect of drugs with anticholinergic properties may pose a significant risk in the post-discharge period of patients who have undergone elective cardiac surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between anticholinergic burden and 6-month postdischarge mortality in older cardiac surgery patients.

Methods: This study performed a retrospective longitudinal analysis of patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery at a tertiary care centre from January 2021 to January 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and intramuscular diclofenac sodium for pain relief and their impact on achieving stone-free status in patients undergoing shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) for kidney stones.
  • A total of 61 patients were analyzed, with 31 receiving ESPB and 30 receiving diclofenac; results showed that the ESPB group had significantly lower pain scores (VAS) and required less fluoroscopy time and targeting.
  • While both groups had similar outcomes in terms of stone characteristics and free status, the ESPB group demonstrated a trend towards higher stone-free rates and reduced radiation exposure during the procedure.
