With the increase in life expectancy, the number of elderly individuals undergoing hemiarthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty has risen, leading to a higher incidence of implant-related fractures. Diagnosing fractures, especially occult and non-displaced ones, can be challenging even with advanced imaging techniques. This report describes the diagnostic challenges and surgical management of a rare combination of periprosthetic femoral fracture and an ipsilateral acetabular occult non-displaced fracture.

Insulin-producing pancreatic β-like cells derived from human pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) are anticipated as a novel cell source for cell replacement therapy for diabetes patients. Here, we describe the identification of small molecule compounds that promote the differentiation of the PSCs into insulin-producing cells by high throughput screening with a chemical library composed of 55,000 compounds. The initial hit compound K-1 and one derivative K-3 increased the proportion of PSC-derived insulin-positive endocrine cells and their glucose-stimulated insulin secretory (GSIS) functions.

Since copper has been extensively studied due to its unique ability to reduce carbon dioxide to hydrocarbons and alcohols, it tends to yield a mixture of products. Among various efforts to improve the selectivity and efficiency of this catalysis, the introduction of organic molecules and polymers on the copper/electrolyte interface has proven to be an effective and promising way to improve surface activity, considering the variation and precise designability of organic structures. The role of surface molecular modifiers, however, is not as simple as that in homogeneous catalysts, and an understanding of a wide scale of interactions from the atomic scale to the whole electrode structure is required.

Epidemiological studies suggest that poor nutrition during pregnancy predisposes offspring to the development of lifestyle-related noncommunicable diseases and psychiatric disorders later in life. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this predisposition are not well understood. In our previous study, using rats as model animals, we showed that behavioral impairments are induced by prenatal undernutrition.
