Introduction: Autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets (ADHR) is caused by pathogenic variants in the fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) gene, which plays a key role in the regulation of phosphorus metabolism. FGF23 has the RXXR motif recognized by furin, leading to cleavage between R179 and S180 and thereby inactivating the protein's function. Previously reported variants in FGF23 causing ADHR occurred only affecting residues R176 or R179, which are located in the RXXR motif, leading to impaired cleavage.

: The usefulness and problems with lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) with a percutaneous pedicle screw (PPS) for dialysis-related spondyloarthropathy are not clear. Therefore, we investigated the usefulness and problems with LLIF with PPS in dialysis-related spondyloarthropathy. : In total, 77 patients who underwent LLIF with PPS were divided into two groups: the dialysis-related spondyloarthropathy group ("Group D") consisted of 15 patients (10 males and 5 females) with a mean age of 70.

Background/aim: Under severe hypoxia, cellular apoptosis is induced through hypoxia-inducible factor 1, alpha subunit (HIF-1α)-dependent P53 accumulation and P53 phosphorylation via ataxia telangiectasia mutated and ataxia telangiectasia and RAD3-related (ATR) activation via replication stress-induced DNA damage response (DDR) activation. We previously demonstrated that the topoisomerase I catalytic inhibitor, 3-O-(2'E,4'Z-decadienoyl)-20-O-acetylingenol (3EZ,20Ac-ingenol), induced apoptosis in Jeko-1 and Panc-1 cells, both of which show cyclin D1 overexpression. After progression to the S phase facilitated by nuclear cyclin D1, an intra S phase checkpoint was induced in the presence of 3EZ,20Ac-ingenol, by ATR activation in response to replication stress-induced DDR.

Pancreatic cancer is associated with a poor prognosis; thus, there is an urgent need to develop new and effective treatments. Ingenol mebutate (IM), which is isolated from the latex of Euphorbia peplus, was recently shown to be effective against pancreatic cancer cell lines; however, its mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we focused on the less drug-sensitive pancreatic cancer cell line Panc-1 and compared IM to commercially available anticancer drugs using cell survival assays.

Article Synopsis
  • About twice as many boys as girls receive growth hormone therapy for growth hormone deficiency (GHD), but this may be due to a selection bias rather than actual prevalence.
  • A study involving 3,902 children at 17 short stature clinics found no significant difference in the percentage of boys (45.7%) and girls (49.8%) undergoing GH stimulation tests, nor in the diagnosis rates of GHD (22.0% for boys vs. 20.1% for girls).
  • The observed boy-to-girl ratio in both short stature and GHD diagnoses was similar (1.58:1 and 1.59:1 respectively), suggesting that more boys seek treatment due to parental concerns about boys' height
