When determining extracorporeal oxygen transfer (V ML O 2 ) during venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) dissolved oxygen is often considered to play a subordinate role due to its poor solubility in blood plasma. This study was designed to assess the impact of dissolved oxygen on systemic oxygenation in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) on VV ECMO support by differentiating between dissolved and hemoglobin-bound extracorporeal oxygen transfer. We calculated both extracorporeal oxygen transfer based on blood gas analysis using the measuring energy expenditure in extracorporeal lung support patients (MEEP) protocol and measured oxygen uptake by the native lung with indirect calorimetry.

Background: The Rhynchosporium species complex consists of hemibiotrophic fungal pathogens specialized to different sweet grass species including the cereal crops barley and rye. A sexual stage has not been described, but several lines of evidence suggest the occurrence of sexual reproduction. Therefore, a comparative genomics approach was carried out to disclose the evolutionary relationship of the species and to identify genes demonstrating the potential for a sexual cycle.

Mycolata form a group of Gram-positive bacteria with unique cell envelope structures that are known for their high tolerance against antibiotics and both aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. An important part of the unique surface structure of the mycolata is the presence of long chain α-alkyl-β-hydroxy fatty acids, the mycolic acids. In order to investigate the adaptive changes in the mycolic acid composition, we investigated the composition of mycolic acids during the response both to osmotic stress caused by NaCl and to 4-chlorophenol in Rhodococcus opacus PWD4.

Biocompatible polymers used as encapsulation and packaging materials for implantable electronic devices have to comply with numerous requirements. Especially their barrier properties against water molecules and ions are of particular interest regarding the reliability of the encapsulation as well as functional integrity of the electronic components since water and ions on the circuit board may evoke corrosion, leakage current and finally the failure of the device. This paper describes a measurement setup to investigate the ionic permeability under in vitro conditions of polymeric membranes manufactured from various biocompatible polymers.

Tryptic peptides of a feline large granular lymphoma cell line were analyzed by liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). Seventeen proteins of the T cell receptor signaling pathway could be identified by this approach. So far the existence of these proteins has only been postulated in the protein databases while experimental proof of their expression is predominantly pending.
