Modelling heart rate dynamics in relation to speed and power output in sprint kayaking as a basis for training evaluation and optimisation.

With the development of power output sensors in the field of paddle sports and the ongoing advancements in dynamical analysis of exercise data, this study aims to model the measurements of external training intensity in relation to heart rate (HR) time-series during flat-water kayak sprint. Nine elite athletes performed a total of 47 interval training sessions with incremental intensity (light to (sub-) maximal effort levels). The data of HR, speed and power output were measured continuously and rating of perceived exertion and blood lactate concentration ([BLa]) were sampled at the end of each interval stage.

Periodontitis and dental quality of life predict long-term survival in head and neck cancer.

Background: Our aim was to investigate oral health in newly diagnosed head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients in relation to long-term survival. We assessed whether the level of alveolar bone loss due to periodontitis at diagnosis, measured from orthopantomogram (OPG), and reported dental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores obtained at diagnosis contain prognostic information for HNSCC patients.

Methods: A total of 79 patients from a consecutive cohort of 106 diagnosed with HNSCC between November 2002 and June 2005 were included.

Pleural Empyema Caused by Streptococcus intermedius and Fusobacterium nucleatum: A Distinct Entity of Pleural Infections.

Background: Many community-acquired pleural infections are caused by facultative and anaerobic bacteria from the human oral microbiota. The epidemiology, clinical characteristics, pathogenesis, and etiology of such infections are little studied. The aim of the present prospective multicenter cohort study was to provide a thorough microbiological and clinical characterization of such oral-type pleural infections and to improve our understanding of the underlying etiology and associated risk factors.

Background: Chronic non-bacterial osteomyelitis is an inflammatory bone disorder that may affect children and adolescents. Infections, malignancy and other differential diagnoses require consideration. Osteomyelitis of the jaw is a rare condition, but non-bacterial osteomyelitis is probably more common than previously thought, also in the mandible.

Temporomandibular joint prosthesis in cancer reconstruction preceding radiation therapy.
