[Maternal serum screening for Down's syndrome: a user's club experience].

Screening of Down syndrome using maternal serum markers requires specific quality management. We report here a user's club experience (Down's Club Abbott) in surveying performances of AxSYM total beta hCG and AFP reagents combined to Maciel software. Regular analysis was carried out during three years (1998 to 2000).

Prevalence of drugs of abuse in urine of drivers involved in road accidents in France: a collaborative study.

The collaborative, anonymous, case-control study was intended to determine the prevalence of opiates, cocaine metabolites, cannabinoids and amphetamines in the urine of drivers injured in road accidents and to compare these values with those of non-accident subjects ("patients") in France. Recruitment was performed nationwide in the emergency departments of five hospitals and comprised 296 "drivers" aged 18 to 35 and 278 non-traumatic "patients" in the same age range. The prevalence of antibodies to the hepatitis E virus (HEV) was measured in a group of 129 adults from Bujumbura, Burundi, using an ELISA. The prevalence of anti-HEV IgG was 14%, much lower than that of hepatitis A virus (HAV) (97.7%).

Therefore the Abbott Laboratories established a study to estimate the consumption of opiates, cannabinoids, cocaine and amphetamines among young adults involved in a road accident and to compare with a control group.
