The Japanese subalpine zone is dominated by an ecologically important forest biome, subalpine coniferous forest, constituting a distinct assemblage of cold-tolerant angiosperm and conifer species. While being relatively intact compared to other forest biomes in Japan, subalpine coniferous forests are under significant threat from deer browsing, global warming and small population size effects. However, there is a severe lack of genetic resources available for this biome's major constituent plant species.

The heartwood color of a major plantation tree Cryptomeria japonica shows high variability among clones and cultivars, and brighter heartwood has higher value in the usage of non-laminated wood such as in traditional construction, which makes heartwood color an important trait in breeding of this species. However, the genetic basis of the interactions between genetics and the environment on heartwood color has been understudied while these are necessary for effective breeding programs in multiple environmental condition. A contig covering the entire region of Chlorella vulgaris chromosome I (980 kb long), consisting of 33 cosmid clones has been constructed. By cross-hybridization with other chromosomal DNAs, universal structural elements were detected and localized on the contig. They were composed of at least three different elements: short interspersed DNA elements (SINE)-like elements, long interspersed DNA elements (LINE)-like elements and a putative centromere-like element.
