Aging is a complex process that involves many physiological mechanisms that gradually impair normal cellular and tissue function and make us more susceptible to diseases and death. It is influenced by intrinsic factors like cellular function and extrinsic factors like pollution and UV radiation. Recent scientific studies show that traditional plant-based foods and supplements can help mitigate the effects of aging.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how Salacia reticulata (SR) and simvastatin (SVS) affect oxidative stress and insulin resistance in rats on a high-fat diet.
  • Results showed that both SR and SVS significantly reduced harmful effects of high-fat diets, like elevated triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, while increasing HDL levels and improving antioxidant enzyme activity.
  • SR outperformed SVS, suggesting that these treatments could be a new approach to managing obesity and metabolic disorders.

Quorum sensing (QS) is the ability of bacteria to monitor their population density and adjust gene expression accordingly. QS-regulated processes include host-microbe interactions, horizontal gene transfer, and multicellular behaviours (such as the growth and development of biofilm). The creation, transfer, and perception of bacterial chemicals known as autoinducers or QS signals are necessary for QS signalling (e.

A detailed audiological study combined with certain haematological investigations which were never previously done was undertaken on Todas, a small vanishing tribe of Nilgiris, South India. Ten per cent of the Todas studied exhibited otosclerosis which, though lower than that of a previous study, is still a very high percentage when compared to the general population. The incidence of chronic suppurative otitis media in Todas is markedly low (1-6 per cent) and 13-3 per cent of Todas had sensorineural hearing loss.
