Due to the unique nature of neurosurgery, perioperative bleeding may have devastating consequences and cause major morbidity and mortality. The recommendation to discontinue aspirin prior to major neurosurgical procedures rests upon conventional practice, expert consensus with priority given to avoidance of any major bleed.

This review explores the bidirectional relationship between the human microbiome and SARS-CoV-2 infection, elucidating its implications for COVID-19 susceptibility, severity, and therapeutic strategies. Metagenomic analyses reveal notable alterations in microbiome composition associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, impacting disease severity and clinical outcomes. Dysbiosis within the respiratory, gastrointestinal, oral, and skin microbiomes exacerbates COVID-19 pathology through immune dysregulation and inflammatory pathways.

The asymmetric syntheses of naturally occurring biologically relevant -abietane diterpenoids, (-)-taiwaniaquinone G (), and H () have been reported via a chiral pool strategy starting from commercially available abietic acid. A ring contraction of the middle ring of the [6,6,6]-carbotricyclic abietane diterpenoid core was carried out under the Wolff rearrangement. Finally, the synthesis of (-)-taiwaniaquinone H () was completed via a one-pot CAN-mediated oxidative decarboxylation.

We report the first asymmetric total synthesis of recently isolated heterodimeric alkaloids, narcipavlines A (1a) and B (1b), and narcikachnines A (2a) and B (2b), thereby confirming their absolute stereochemistry. These alkaloids showcase a unique heterodimeric structure, amalgamating two distinct types of alkaloids: the -hydrodibenzofuran containing tetracyclic galantamine core (6a) and the galanthindole core (7) featuring a biaryl axis. The presence of this biaryl axis, coupled with the substantial galantamine core (6a) at the substituents, imposes constraints on free rotation around the C-C axis, resulting in atropisomerism, an exceedingly rare phenomenon in nature.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals widely used in various products, including food packaging, textiles, and firefighting foam, owing to their unique properties such as amphiphilicity and strong CF bonds. Despite their widespread use, concerns have arisen due to their resistance to degradation and propensity for bioaccumulation in both environmental and human systems. Emerging evidence suggests a potential link between PFAS exposure and neurotoxic effects, spanning cognitive deficits, neurodevelopmental disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases.
