An emerging focus of research at the intersection of botany, zoology, and microbiology is the study of floral nectar as a microbial habitat, referred to as the nectar microbiome, which can alter plant-pollinator interactions. Studies on these microbial communities have primarily focused on yeasts, and it was only about a decade ago that bacteria began to be studied as widespread inhabitants of floral nectar. This review aims to give an overview of the current knowledge on nectar bacteria, with emphasis on evolutionary origin, dispersal mode, effects on nectar chemistry and plant-animal interactions, community assembly, agricultural applications, and their use as model systems in ecological research.

During the course of two independent studies conducted in Hungary and Spain, four conspecific yeast strains were isolated from flowers of different plant species. DNA sequences of two barcoding regions, the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region (ITS1-5.8S rRNA gene-ITS2), revealed that the four strains represent an undescribed (family , ) species.

We assessed the prevalence of azole resistance in M. pachydermatis isolates from cases of dog otitis or skin disease attended in a veterinary teaching hospital during a 2-year period and analyzed the ERG11 (encoding a lanosterol 14-α demethylase, the primary target of azoles) and whole genome sequence diversity of a group of isolates that displayed reduced azole susceptibility.
