Is violence against men a problem in Sri Lanka?

Background: Gender-based violence (GBV) among men is a universally present phenomenon that is mostly unacknowledged. The relative lack of research in this area leads to a deficiency of evidence ascribing due recognition to GBV among men. This, in turn, leads to not identifying it as a social problem, hence, poor development of resources for victims as well as poor help-seeking behaviour patterns are prevalent, especially in Southeast Asia.

Colonoscopy is a widely used method of screening, diagnosis and intervention. Complications are infrequent and generally present as colonic perforation or colonic hemorrhage. A rare and life-threatening complication of colonoscopy is splenic injury or rupture.

The Effects of Maternal Under-Nutrition and a Post-Natal High Fat Diet on Lens Growth, Transparency and Oxidative Defense Systems in Rat Offspring.

Purpose: A poor early life nutrition environment is well established to result in a range of cardiometabolic disorders in offspring in later life. These effects can be exacerbated via exposure to an obesogenic dietary environment. To date, the effect of maternal diet and/or a post-natal obesogenic nutritional environment on key characteristics related to lens growth and oxidative stress has not been undertaken.

Resection of the large bowel suppresses hunger and food intake and modulates gastrointestinal fermentation.

Objective: To assess appetite and gut hormone levels in patients following partial (PR) or total resection (TR) of the large bowel.

Methods: A comparative cross sectional study was carried out with healthy controls (n = 99) and patients who had undergone PR (n = 64) or TR (n = 12) of the large bowel. Participants consumed a standard (720 kcal) breakfast meal at 0830 (t = 0) h followed by lactulose (15 g) and a buffet lunch (t = 210 min).

Alterations in redox markers begin prior to the onset of clinical symptoms, suggesting early changes in the oxidant/antioxidant balance. Early identification of redox markers may be of clinical usefulness in the management of patients with dengue virus infection.
