Recognition plays a key role in the social lives of gregarious species, enabling animals to distinguish among social partners and tailor their behaviour accordingly. As domesticated animals regularly interact with humans, as well as members of their own species, we might expect mechanisms used to discriminate between conspecifics to also apply to humans. Given that goats can combine visual and vocal cues to recognise one another, we investigated whether this cross-modal recognition extends to discriminating among familiar humans.

Cirrhosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality; however, there are no approved therapies except orthotopic liver transplantation. Preclinical studies showed that bone-marrow-derived macrophage injections reduce inflammation, resolve fibrosis and stimulate liver regeneration. In a multicenter, open-label, parallel-group, phase 2 randomized controlled trial ( ISRCTN10368050 ) in n = 51 adult patients with compensated cirrhosis and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score ≥10 and ≤17, we evaluated the efficacy of autologous monocyte-derived macrophage therapy (n = 27) compared to standard medical care (n = 24).

Bone marrow adipose tissue is a distinct adipose subtype comprising more than 10% of fat mass in healthy humans. However, the functions and pathophysiological correlates of this tissue are unclear, and its genetic determinants remain unknown. Here, we use deep learning to measure bone marrow adiposity in the femoral head, total hip, femoral diaphysis, and spine from MRI scans of approximately 47,000 UK Biobank participants, including over 41,000 white and over 6300 non-white participants.

Article Synopsis
  • Parental smoking is the main source of secondhand smoke exposure in children, leading to respiratory issues, and promoting smoke-free homes is crucial, particularly in rural areas like Kuala Kubu Bharu, Malaysia.
  • The study used surveys and interviews in 2022 to assess knowledge and beliefs about secondhand smoke, with 60 participants showing moderate understanding but revealing barriers like personal convenience and social influence to adopting smoke-free practices.
  • Findings indicate a need for tailored health promotion efforts in these communities, as men's beliefs about smoking cessation may hinder smoke-free home adoption, highlighting the importance of culturally sensitive interventions.
