Article Synopsis
  • American lobsters are found in the unusual Bras d'Or Lake system, where their population density is lower than in other Atlantic areas, but they hold cultural significance for the local Mi'kmaq community.
  • Researchers used acoustic telemetry and local knowledge to study the movements and habitat preferences of adult lobsters, revealing they favor areas with a mix of soft and hard sediments.
  • Despite limited shelters in these preferred habitats, lobsters show less fear of predators, which permits them to explore more freely.

Background: Household pets can carry meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) introduced to the home by their human companions. Specific factors promoting pet carriage of this pathogen have not been fully elucidated.

Objective: This study evaluated MRSA cultured from pets and the home environment in households where a human infected with MRSA had been identified, and aimed to determine potential risk factors for pet MRSA carriage.

By measuring the temporal consistency, or repeatability, in the diets of predators, we can gain a better understanding of the degree of individual specialization in resource utilization and implications for predator-prey interactions, population dynamics, and food web structure. To measure repeatability, we require repeated diet estimates of individuals over time, such as those derived from quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA), a popular diet estimation technique. However, diet estimates are often lengthy compositional vectors with many zeros, as some prey will not be consumed by all individuals, precluding the use of previously proposed measures of repeatability.

Purpose: To report a rare case of primary sebaceous gland carcinoma of the bulbar conjunctiva without palpebral involvement.

Observation: A 76-year-old male was referred to the cornea service for a suspicious lesion on the limbal conjunctiva and cornea of his left eye. On exam, there was a large fibrovascular growth with conjunctivalization of the cornea from 2:00 to 10:00 extending 6mm onto the cornea.
