Osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with sclerosis, a thickening of the subchondral bone plate, yet little is known about bone adaptations around full-thickness cartilage defects in severe knee OA, particularly beneath bone-on-bone wear grooves. This high-resolution micro-computed tomography (microCT) study aimed to quantify subchondral bone microstructure relative to cartilage defect location, distance from the joint space, and groove depth. Ten tibial plateaus with full-thickness cartilage defects were microCT-scanned to determine defect location and size.

Introduction: The harmful alga Karenia brevis (K. brevis) releases brevetoxins (PbTx) that cause respiratory and neurological symptoms. The apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele has been linked to poor neurological outcomes after exposure to environmental toxicants.

Effective conservation strategies inherently depend on preserving populations, which in turn requires accurate tools for their detection. Beluga whales () inhabit the circumpolar Arctic and form discrete summer aggregations. Previous genetic studies using mitochondrial and microsatellite loci have delineated distinct populations associated to summer aggregations but the extent of dispersal and interbreeding among these populations remains largely unknown.

Background: This review explores the discriminative ability of fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) in major osteoporotic fracture (MOF) and hip fracture (HF) risk prediction and the densitometric diagnosis of osteoporosis in Asian populations.

Methods: We systematically searched the EMBASE, Cochrane, and PubMed databases from the earliest indexing date to January 2024. Studies were included if FRAX was used to identify future osteoporotic fractures or a densitometric diagnosis of osteoporosis in an Asian population and reported the area under the curve (AUC) values.

Giraffe (Giraffa spp.) are among the most unique extant mammals in terms of anatomy, phylogeny, and ecology. However, aspects of their evolution, ontogeny, and taxonomy are unresolved, retaining lingering questions that are pivotal for their conservation.
