Anesthetic induction for ECT with etomidate is associated with longer seizure duration than thiopentone.

Many factors influence seizure duration associated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). This is a chart review study to assess seizure duration measured with both electroencephalography and electromyography after anesthetic induction with either thiopentone or etomidate. Thirty-seven patients receiving ECT for depression were entered into the study, and a pair of seizures was measured from each patient.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. A case report.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis is a rare hereditary disease, which manifests with tendinous xanthomas, cataracts, dementia and nervous system involvement. The first southern African black patient with this disorder is reported and biochemical abnormalities and treatment are briefly discussed.

Three-dimensional echoventriculography.

A method of generating a three-dimensional image of the human left ventricle by computer techniques is described. The volume of each image was estimated by a modification of Simpson's rule. The method was applied to nine suitable patients and estimations of end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes were compared to volumes determined by cineangiography.

Effects of systemic hypertension on ischemic and nonischemic regional left ventricular function in awake, unsedated dogs after experimental coronary occlusion.

Hypertension and atherosclerotic coronary arterial obstruction frequently coexist in patients. However, the effect of increased aortic pressure on ischemic segmental dysfunction is not well understood. We studied the effects of aortic pressure increases on segmental left ventricular function during myocardial ischemia.

This study examined the relationships between the left ventricular (LV) regional function, regional myocardial blood flow (RMBF), and myocellular necrosis after sudden proximal occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) in 36 awake, unsedated dogs. Net wall thickening during systole (NET) was used to assess regional LV function, was expressed as percent control, and was measured with chronically implanted ultrasonic crystals. RMBF was measured with 8- to 10-micrometer radioactive microspheres.
