Background: The incidence of diverticulitis in young patients is rising, whereas the type I:III collagen ratio of the colon decreases with age. Perhaps a lower type I:III collagen ratio in younger patients may predispose these patients to the development of the disease.
Method: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the collagen content and type I:III collagen ratio in patients with diverticulitis versus a control group.
Foreign body granulomatosis is a rare complication of intravenous injection of pulverized oral prescription tablets. We present the case of an active duty male who was ultimately diagnosed with foreign body granulomatosis caused by the crushing and intravenous injection of acetaminophen with oxycodone (Percocet). The 24-year-old patient initially presented with multiple syncopal episodes, hemoptysis and hypoxia.

This 1:1:1 approach ignores the additional fluids added for anticoagulation and preservation of the components and assumes that there is a one-size-fits-all ratio that must be used across all types of trauma. In this article, we explain the rationale behind our conclusion with supporting figures and suggest that although the 1:1:1 ratio might be within the range of hemostasis, it falls near the lower cusp of hemostasis, making it less than ideal.

Synthetic androgenic steroids are shown to cause cholestatic liver injury, but the exact mechanism of injury is not completely understood. We present a case of a healthy, young, active duty Army male soldier who developed pruritis and jaundice shortly after starting to take a body-building supplement containing anabolic steroids, and was subsequently found to have significant biopsy proven drug-induced liver injury.

Methods: Sixty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to either an MBP group (n = 34) or a control group (n = 34). Twenty-four hours after the completion of the MBP, both groups were euthanized, and the colons were harvested.
