We share our experiences of instructing three patients with severe upper limb dysfunction on how to self-adjust CPAP/NPPV masks. In Case 1, we simplified the procedure by suturing a part of the headband as the left forearm was amputated. In Case 2, the patient had congenitally short limbs with short stature; thus, we provided an additional belt to the headband to maintain the headband's configuration while wearing the mask.

Brassinolide (BL) is a possible plant growth regulator in agriculture, but the presence of a steroid skeleton hampers the field application of BL in agriculture because of its high synthetic cost. We discovered NSBR1 as the first nonsteroidal BL-like compound using in silico technology. Searching for more potent BL-like compounds, we modified the structure of NSBR1 with respect to 2 benzene rings and the piperazine ring.

In order to study the wear of bag-filter by ash dust, sintered magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) compact was used for counter material for sliding wear test. The precise amount of magnetite particles embedded into bag-filter was determined by a vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement. It is found that net amount of wear of the bag-filter could be precisely determined by the magnetic measurement.

The phase behavior and structure of sucrose ester/water/oil systems in the presence of long-chain cosurfactant (monolaurin) and small amounts of ionic surfactants was investigated by phase study and small angle X-ray scattering. In a water/sucrose ester/monolaurin/decane system at 27 degrees C, instead of a three-phase microemulsion, lamellar liquid crystals are formed in the dilute region. Unlike other systems in the presence of alcohol as cosurfactant, the HLB composition does not change with dilution, since monolaurin adsorbs almost completely in the interface.

In order to define the major genetic factor(s) for the development of Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus in Japanese subjects, a population association study of candidate genes involved in either glucose or lipid metabolism was carried out using microsatellite DNA polymorphisms. Each polymorphic locus near the four candidate genes, hexokinase II (HKII), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R), fatty acid binding protein-2 (FABP-2), and apolipoprotein C-II (apoC-II) genes, were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using 32P-labelled primers and each subject was genotyped for the association study. The HKII, GLP1R, FABP-2, and apoC-II polymorphisms exhibited 18, 10, 7, and 10 alleles, respectively.
