Article Synopsis
  • Pericardial effusion is a serious condition that can happen after doctors put in heart devices, and it might lead to even worse problems like cardiac tamponade.
  • Researchers studied data from over 55,000 patients in Denmark to find out what factors might increase the chances of this happening after getting heart devices like pacemakers.
  • They found that certain things, like being female, having heart failure, or the number of leads in the device, can make it more likely to have a problem called procedural pericardial effusion, even though it's pretty rare.

Aims: To assess the association between statin use and cataract surgery according to different statin treatment durations in patients with different cardiovascular risk profiles.

Methods And Results: We performed a nested case-control study using Danish registries, covering the period from 1 January 1996 to 31 December 2020. We defined cases as surgically treated cataract patients, matched in a 1:1 ratio by sex and age with controls not undergoing cataract surgery.

Pulse oximeters are widely used in hospitals and homes for measurement of blood oxygen saturation level (SpO) and heart rate (HR). Concern has been raised regarding a possible bias in obtaining pulse oximeter measurements from different fingertips and the potential effect of skin pigmentation (white, brown, and dark). In this study, we obtained 600 SpO measurements from 20 volunteers using three UK NHS-approved commercial pulse oximeters alongside our custom-developed sensor, and used the Munsell colour system (5YR and 7.

Aims: We studied the effect of discontinuing beta-blockers following myocardial infarction in comparison to continuous beta-blocker use in optimally treated, stable patients without heart failure.

Methods And Results: Using nationwide registers, we identified first-time myocardial infarction patients treated with beta-blockers following percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary angiography. The analysis was based on landmarks selected as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years after the first redeemed beta-blocker prescription date.

High data rate coverage, security, and energy efficiency will play a key role in the continued performance scaling of next-generation mobile systems. Dense, small mobile cells based on a novel network architecture are part of the answer. Motivated by the recent mounting interest in free-space optical (FSO) technologies, this paper addresses a novel mobile fronthaul network architecture based on FSO, spread spectrum codes, and graphene modulators for the creation of dense small cells.
