Background: Robust epidemiological data regarding population incidence and prevalence of functional neurological disorder (FND) would be helpful with regards to resource allocation and planning for this disorder, particularly given high symptom burden and high healthcare utilisation. We therefore aimed to systematically review and synthesise available data on FND incidence and prevalence.

Methods: PubMed was searched to identify original research articles that reported on the incidence or prevalence of FND.

Radiation oncology is among the most data-driven specialties in medicine. Recently, a wealth of peer-reviewed data has been published supporting the treatment of oligometastatic malignancies, demonstrating improved survival with metastasis-directed therapy, such as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), when combined with appropriate patient selection and treatment. However, there are currently few, if any, established guidelines that synthesize the abundance of data specific to radiotherapy into a single, easily accessed resource for clinicians.

: Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) and the most prevalent cancers in the United States. Image-guided superficial radiotherapy (IGSRT) is a relatively new treatment option that uses high-resolution dermal ultrasound integrated with superficial radiotherapy to improve tumor visualization. IGSRT is a clinically equivalent non-surgical alternative to Mohs micrographic surgery at 2 years of follow-up in early-stage NMSC, but larger cohort studies with longer follow-up periods that allow for analysis of patient outcomes by demographic and disease characteristics are needed.

Article Synopsis
  • - NRG Oncology's subcommittee gathered a diverse group of experts to tackle the issues faced in early phase clinical trials that combine radiation therapy with new treatment drugs.
  • - The review highlights unique challenges in designing these trials, noting that they differ from traditional drug-drug combinations and are often neglected in planning.
  • - The authors suggest potential solutions to overcome these barriers and present examples of clinical trial designs aimed at improving the assessment of these innovative drug-radiotherapy combinations.
