Systematic review of what people know about brain health.

Objectives: As we age our cognitive abilities can change. However, the degree of change experienced is influenced by a range of factors. To understand what the public know about risk and protective factors for cognitive ageing, a systematic review was conducted of studies considering what people know about brain health.

Perceptions of an acute medical unit in internal medicine on interprofessional collaboration.

We aimed to assess perceptions about interprofessional collaboration (IPC) of healthcare professionals working in an acute medical unit (AMU) in an internal medicine department in the United Arab Emirates. The AMU provides care during the initial 24 to 72 hours of admission and emphasizes interprofessional collaboration. Using the Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale II, the study measured partnership, cooperation, and coordination among team members.

Relaxin-2 is a novel biomarker for differentiated thyroid carcinoma in humans.

Relaxin's role in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has been suggested but its characterization in a large clinical sample remains limited. We performed immunohistochemistry for relaxin-2 (RLN2), CD68 (total macrophages), CD163 (M2 macrophages) on tissue microarrays from 181 subjects with non-distant metastatic DTC, and 185 subjects with benign thyroid tissue. Mean pixels/area for each marker was compared between tumor and adjacent tissue via paired-t test and between DTC and benign subjects via t-test assuming unequal variances.

Components of effective letters of recommendation: A cross-sectional survey of academic faculty.

Introduction: Conventional merit-based criteria, including standardized test scores and grade point averages, have become less available to residency programs to help distinguish applicants, making other components of the application, including letters of recommendation (LORs), important surrogate markers for performance. Despite their impact on applications, there is limited published data on LORs in the international setting.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey of academic faculty was conducted between 9 January 2023 and 12 March 2023 at two large academic medical centers in the United Arab Emirates.

Diabetes control is worse in children and young people with type 1 diabetes requiring interpreter support.

Introduction: Language barriers can pose a significant hurdle to successfully educating children and young people with type 1 diabetes (CYPD) and their families, potentially influencing their glycaemic control.

Methods: Retrospective case-control study assessing HbA1c values at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months post-diagnosis in 41 CYPD requiring interpreter support (INT) and 100 age-, sex- and mode-of-therapy-matched CYPD not requiring interpreter support (CTR) in our multi-diverse tertiary diabetes centre. Data were captured between 2009-2016.
