Infection of plants by root-knot nematodes is often accompanied by physiological changes characteristic of ageing. Ultra-low tissue luminescence of infected plants indicated oxidation of cell-membrane lipids. Cells with membranes subjected to oxidation lose some of their capacity for water retention.
