We have engineered a Positionally Stable Smooth Implant (PSSI) containing millimeter-scaled cylindrical wells on the implant surface for capsule ingrowth and device stabilization. : To evaluate the long-term positional stability of PSSI designs and characterize capsule formation.

Ultrasonic disruption of circulating amyloid β aggregates via phase-change peptide nanoemulsions.

Amyloid β (Aβ) assemblies exist not only in the central nervous system, but can circulate within the bloodstream to trigger and exacerbate peripheral, cerebrovascular, and neurodegenerative disorders. Eliminating excess peripheral Aβ fibrils, therefore, holds promise to improve the management of amyloid-related diseases. Here, we present nanoemulsion-mediated ultrasonic ablation of circulating Aβ fibrils to both destroy established plaques and prevent the re-growth of ablated fragments back into toxic species.

RNAi-based biocontrol for crops: a revised expectation for a non-recent technology.

The exogenous application of RNAi technology offers new promises for crops improvement. Cell-based or synthetically produced strands are economical, non-transgenic and could induce the same responses. The substantial population growth demands novel strategies to produce crops without further damaging the environment.

Clinical and economic burden of varicella in pediatric patients hospitalized in four institutions in Guatemala.

Varicella presents a public health challenge in Guatemala, with limited evidence regarding its impact; vaccine is currently absent from the national immunization program. Generating local data on the economic and health burden can support immunization policies. This study describes the use of hospital resources, costs of care, clinical and demographic characteristics, and complications in children with varicella.
