Reconstructing habitat types available to hominins and inferring how the paleo-landscape changed through time are critical steps in testing hypotheses about the selective pressures that drove the emergence of bipedalism, tool use, a change in diet, and progressive encephalization. Change in the amount and distribution of woody vegetation has been suggested as one of the important factors that shaped early hominin evolution. Previous models for reconstructing woody cover at eastern African hominin fossil sites used global-scale modern soil comparative datasets.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate the use of a pelvic binder (PBR) in assessing the stability of lateral compression type 1 (LC1) pelvis fractures in awake patients while measuring fracture displacement and safety.
  • - Conducted at two medical centers, the prospective trial involved 31 adult patients who had eligible LC1 fractures, with results showing that all patients tolerated the PBR and experienced minimal displacement of fractures.
  • - Findings indicated that PBR is both feasible and safe for determining pelvis fracture instability, with most patients managing mild pain, and no major adverse events during the trial.

Introduction: Geriatric hip fractures are associated with high rates of disability and mortality. Many of these patients require perioperative and postoperative allogeneic blood transfusions, which carry several noteworthy risks. A growing body of literature supports the efficacy of tranexamic acid (TXA) in geriatric hip fractures, without sufficient data examining which subgroups are likely to benefit the most.

Purpose: To describe modes of failure of cervical TDR, their related treatment strategies, and to describe a management strategy for the treatment of failed cervical TDR.

Methods: This retrospective study was based on a consecutive series of 53 cervical TDR patients who underwent removal or revision surgery. Chart review was conducted to collect general descriptive data, reasons for TDR removal/revision, duration from index implantation to re-operation, and the subsequent procedure performed.
