Article Synopsis

A multicenter study in Japan analyzed bacterial infections in general surgery from April 2004 to March 2005, identifying 645 strains from 286 patients with surgical infections, including both primary and postoperative cases.
Anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria were more common in primary infections, while aerobic Gram-positive bacteria dominated postoperative infections, with notable strains such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp. being prevalent.
Resistance patterns were observed, including some strains of MRSA showing moderate resistance to arbekacin, and 13.3% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were carbapenem-resistant; however, no vancomycin-resistant Gram-positive cocci were detected.
