An increased odontogenic chronic rhinosinusitis (oCRS) occurrence rate has quite recently been reported, likely due to an intensification of conservative dental surgery and implantology. The main aim of the study was to report for the first time the structured histopathological characteristics of the surgical specimens of oCRS. Possible associations between histopathological features and oCRS patho-physiological mechanisms were also evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare the inflammatory cells and histopathology of patients with nasal polyps linked to various conditions, including NERD, intrinsic asthma, EGPA, and odontogenic sinusitis.
  • - Researchers evaluated 71 patients who underwent sinus surgery and found significant differences in eosinophil counts and neutrophil infiltration across the different groups of nasal polyposis.
  • - The findings suggest that examining histopathological features can help differentiate nasal polyp types, which may lead to more tailored treatments and follow-up care based on individual tissue responses.

Purpose: The treatment of middle turbinate (MT) during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) remains a controversial issue. Several authors recommended preservation of MT to avoid complications, but MT resection is sometimes necessary. In the last years, our group has applied an original surgical technique to preserve MT, stabilize its head and ensure patency of the ostiomeatal complex (OMC) in ESS.

Importance: An altered sense of smell and taste has been reported to be associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). To understand the evolution of these symptoms during the course of the disease is important to identify patients with persistent loss of smell or taste and estimate the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on the burden of olfactory and gustative dysfunctions.

Objective: To evaluate the evolution of the loss of sense of smell and taste in a case series of mildly symptomatic patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Background: Aim of this paper was to verify whether the condition described by Spitz as anxiety of the 8th months occurs earlier in the preterm than in the child born at term.

Methods: A prospective study was carried out on 27 subjects subdivided into three groups of 9, 8, 10 patients, respectively, according to gestational age (group I < or = 33 weeks; group II > or = 34 < or = 37 weeks; group III > or = 38 < or = 41 weeks). The cases were selected at random from the patients admitted to the Neuropsychomotor Unit of the Gaslini Institute of Genoa (Italy), from May 1, 1993 to May 22, 1998.
