The Controls Over Mesopelagic Interior Carbon Storage (COMICS) cruise DY086 took place aboard the RRS Discovery in the South Atlantic during November and December, 2017. Physical, chemical, biogeochemical and biological data were collected during three visits to ocean observatory station P3, off the coast of South Georgia, during an austral spring bloom. A diverse range of equipment including CTD-rosette, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), net deployments, marine snow catchers (MSCs), Stand Alone Pump System (SAPS) and PELAGRA Sediment Traps were used to produce a comprehensive, high-quality dataset.

Background: Dual anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) blockade has improved the outcomes of patients with early and metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer. Here we present the final 10-year analysis of the ALTTO trial.

Patients And Methods: The ALTTO trial (NCT00490139) is a prospective randomized, phase III, open-label, multicenter study that investigated the role of adjuvant chemotherapy and trastuzumab alone, in combination or sequentially with lapatinib.

Article Synopsis
  • Soft amorphous materials, like clays and gels, are common viscoelastic solids that can transform from solid to liquid under deformation, altering their microstructure.
  • A workshop at the Lorentz Center in Leiden from January 9 to 13, 2023, focused on this yielding transition in these materials.
  • The resulting manuscript highlights key insights and open questions from discussions at the workshop, pointing to future experimental and theoretical challenges in the field.

Article Synopsis
  • Embryonic morphogenesis involves significant tissue deformations to form functional organs, similar to how adult tissues endure mechanical stresses.
  • Cells must withstand these stresses and move collectively, responding to both internal cellular activities and external forces from surrounding tissues.
  • This study uses a 2D active vertex model to explore how external and internal mechanical influences affect tissue properties, unveiling complex behaviors like yielding and shear thickening, which offer insights into tissue mechanics.

Importance: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Observational studies report that β-blocker use may be associated with reduced risk of COPD exacerbations. However, a recent trial reported that metoprolol did not reduce COPD exacerbations and increased COPD exacerbations requiring hospital admission.
