An Opportunity for Developing Cancer Prevention Leadership in Mexico.

Cancer in Mexico is a major public burden for which rates are expected to increase over time. In settings like Mexico, much potential for reduction through cancer prevention efforts remains unrealized, due in part, to a lack of formal cancer prevention and control training and career opportunities. We trained a cadre of instructors to deliver a pilot cancer prevention education program for oncology professionals and leaders.

Impact of the first year of COVID-19 vaccination strategy in Brazil: an ecological study.

Objectives: No consensus exists about the best COVID-19 vaccination strategy to be adopted by low-income and middle-income countries. Brazil adopted an age-based calendar strategy to reduce mortality and the burden on the healthcare system. This study evaluates the impact of the vaccination campaign in Brazil on the progression of the reported COVID-19 deaths.

Latitudinal patterns in stabilizing density dependence of forest communities.

Numerous studies have shown reduced performance in plants that are surrounded by neighbours of the same species, a phenomenon known as conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD). A long-held ecological hypothesis posits that CNDD is more pronounced in tropical than in temperate forests, which increases community stabilization, species coexistence and the diversity of local tree species. Previous analyses supporting such a latitudinal gradient in CNDD have suffered from methodological limitations related to the use of static data.

Diverse Role of and Porins in Mediating Ertapenem Resistance among Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacterales.

Among carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) are diverse mechanisms, including those that are resistant to meropenem but susceptible to ertapenem, adding further complexity to the clinical landscape. This study investigates the emergence of ertapenem-resistant, meropenem-susceptible (ErMs) and CRE across five hospitals in San Antonio, Texas, USA, from 2012 to 2018. The majority of the CRE isolates were non-carbapenemase producers (NCP; 54%; 41/76); 56% of all NCP isolates had an ErMs phenotype.
