Purpose: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is usually diagnosed many years after diabetes onset. Indeed, an early diagnosis of DR remains a notable challenge, and, thus, developing novel approaches for earlier disease detection is of utmost importance. We aim to explore the potential of texture analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) retinal images in detecting retinal changes in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic animals at "silent" disease stages when early retinal molecular and cellular changes that cannot be clinically detectable are already occurring.

Pulmonary vascular disease is not a single condition; rather it can accompany a variety of pathologies that impact the pulmonary vasculature. Applying precision medicine strategies to better phenotype, diagnose, monitor, and treat pulmonary vascular disease is increasingly possible with the growing accessibility of powerful clinical and research tools. Nevertheless, challenges exist in implementing these tools to optimal effect.

Article Synopsis
  • The Portuguese clinical guidelines recommend 24 hours of hospital monitoring for patients with traumatic brain injuries, even when initial CT scans are normal, despite evidence suggesting this may be unnecessary and potentially harmful.
  • A study analyzed the costs and outcomes of this practice, comparing data from 440 patients admitted in 2022, where only 0.5% developed new intracranial lesions during a 24-hour observation period and one patient (0.2%) died from unrelated causes.
  • The current monitoring protocol cost €163,157, significantly more than the hypothetical scenario of discharging patients after an initial normal CT scan, which would have cost €29,480, highlighting a difference of €133,677.

This work reports the obtention of Si,N,S-CQDs from sugar cane bagasse and their inhibitory action on the mild steel corrosion in 1 mol L HCl solution. The CQDs were successfully obtained and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Dynamic light scattering, Raman, and UV-vis techniques, also showing endogenous self-doping. The anti-corrosive activity of CQDs was investigated by gravimetric tests, potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance measurements, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.

In this work, several imidazo[1,2-]pyridines were synthesized through the Groebke-Blackburn-Bienaymé three-component reaction (GBB-3CR), and their phytotoxicity was evaluated by the influence on the growth of wheat coleoptiles and three important agricultural seeds (, , and ) at test concentrations of 1000, 300, 100, 30, and 10 μM. A structure-activity relationship was established, showing the importance of halogen groups at the position of the attached aromatic ring and the presence of a cyclohexylamine group for greater activity. Post-modification of some GBB-3CR adducts was carried out, leading to imidazo[1,2-]pyridine-tetrazole hybrids, which were also evaluated in these bioassays.
