Sensitivity and specificity of surgeons' intra-operative diagnosis of appendicitis. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Appendicitis is a frequently encountered surgical condition, yet its diagnosis can be challenging. There is increasing research on the safety of leaving macroscopically normal appendices in situ, the necessity of routine histopathological assessment, and the impact of the intra-operative assessment on the post-operative course. We aimed to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the surgeon's intra-operative diagnosis of appendiceal pathology, which is an important factor in answering these questions.

Outcomes in patients receiving continuous monitoring of vital signs on general wards: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

Objective: The timely identification of deterioration on general wards is crucial to patient care with each hour of delay independently associated with increased risk of death. The introduction of continuous monitoring of patient vital signs on general wards, currently not standard care, may improve patient outcomes. Our aim was to investigate whether patients on general wards receiving continuous vital signs monitoring have better outcomes than patients receiving usual care.

Improving quality in adult long covid services: Findings from the LOCOMOTION quality improvement collaborative.

The protracted form of COVID-19 known as 'long covid' was first described in 2020. Its symptoms, course and prognosis vary widely; some patients have a multi-system, disabling and prolonged illness. In 2021, ring-fenced funding was provided to establish 90 long covid clinics in England; some clinics were also established in Scotland and Wales.

Prioritizing research needs and opportunities at the intersection of implementation science and engagement science.

Background: There has been increased attention to the need for, and the positive impact of, engaged or participatory science in recent years. Implementation scientists have an opportunity to leverage and contribute to engagement science (ES) through the systematic integration of engagement into implementation science (IS). The purpose of this study was to gather information from researchers and others to develop a prioritized list of research needs and opportunities at the intersection of IS and ES.

Antiretroviral therapy has dramatically increased the lifespan of people living with HIV (PLWH), but advance care planning (ACP) and hospice services are underutilized in this population. The purpose of this study was to understand barriers and facilitators to ACP among this group. PLWH ( = 25) were recruited from an HIV Clinic at a Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Atlanta, GA to represent a range of sociodemographic characteristics and experiences.
