Histopathological changes of neuronal tissue following the use of hydrogen peroxide in neurosurgical procedures.

Background: Hydrogen peroxide (HP) is routinely used in neurosurgical procedures to achieve surgical hemostasis. However, its safety profile is still debatable with various reports depicting range of adverse effects on neuronal tissue. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of HP as a hemostatic agent in normal neuronal tissue during neurosurgical procedures conducted on rats.

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy for hydrocephalus in children younger than 1 year of age.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the role of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) in the treatment of hydrocephalus in children under 1 year of age. The authors analyzed data of ETV in their institution.

Methods: Between January 1995 and December 2008, 52 ETV procedures were performed for the treatment of hydrocephalus in 49 infants (32 male and 17 female).

Intracranial extraosseous chondroblastoma simulating meningioma.

Extraosseous chondroblastoma had been reported in different parts of the body but not intracranially. We report a case of a pathologically proven intracranial extraosseous chondroblastoma of the right cavernous sinus in an 18-year-old woman with CT, MR, and conventional angiographic features simulating meningioma.

Bifrontal decompressive craniotomy in a 6-month-old infant with posttraumatic refractory intracranial hypertension.

Objective: To document the outcome of bifrontal decompressive craniotomy (BDC) in an infant who developed refractory intracranial hypertension (IH) and massive brain infarction following severe head injury.

Clinical Presentation: A 6-month-old girl sustained a severe closed head injury in a car accident. Her Glasgow coma score dropped from 10 to 6/15 within 6 h after admission, and her pupils became dilated and fixed.

Arteriovenous malformations of the brain: Indications and outcome of microsurgical excision.

This study is based on a retrospective analysis of 30 consecutive patients with previously untreated cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), who were seen at King Khalid University Hospital between 1987 and 1994. There were 17 males and 13 females, ranging in age between nine and 52 years. Twenty patients presented with intracranial hemorrhage, while the remaining 10 complained of epilepsy.
