Article Synopsis
  • Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium) and hypocalcemia (low calcium) are linked to cognitive decline in older adults, but previous research mainly focused on diet instead of actual nutrient levels.
  • The study analyzed data from 1,220 hospitalized patients aged 60+, categorizing them based on their magnesium and calcium levels to see how these deficiencies affect cognitive performance, measured by tests like the MMSE and CDT.
  • Results showed that both deficiencies, along with factors like age, sex, and chronic conditions, significantly lowered cognitive performance, highlighting the importance of monitoring these nutrient levels in seniors.

Climate change is causing rapid warming in the Arctic, which, alongside other physical, socio-economic, cultural, geopolitical, and technological factors, is driving change in the far north. This research presents a conceptual model summarizing Arctic change factors which in turn was used in the design of a Delphi exercise which leveraged a variety of experts to forecast trajectories in different parts of the Arctic. Based on these experts' expectations for economic and governance outcomes by 2050, we find that our results illustrate the "many Arctics" concept or some of the ways in which the Arctic is heterogenous now, and perhaps becoming increasingly so in the future.

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are a debilitating problem, resulting in diminished quality of life due to the continued presence of both chronic and acute pain. The current standard of practice for the repair of PNIs larger than 10 mm is the use of autologous nerve grafts. Autologous nerve grafts have limitations that often result in outcomes that are not sufficient to remove motor and sensory impairments.
