Background: Despite advances in cancer care and detection, >65% of patients with squamous cell cancer of the head and neck (HNSCC) will develop recurrent and/or metastatic disease. The prognosis for these patients is poor with a 5-year overall survival of 39%. Recent treatment advances in immunotherapy, including immune checkpoint inhibitors like pembrolizumab and nivolumab, have resulted in clinical benefit in a subset of patients.

Purpose: Anti-PD-1 therapy provides clinical benefit in 40-50% of patients with relapsed and/or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (RM-HNSCC). Selection of anti- PD-1 therapy is typically based on patient PD-L1 immunohistochemistry (IHC) which has low specificity for predicting disease control. Therefore, there is a critical need for a clinical biomarker that will predict clinical benefit to anti-PD-1 treatment with high specificity.

High-speed nanoindentation rapidly generates large datasets, opening the door for advanced data analysis methods such as the resources available in artificial intelligence. The present study addresses the problem of differentiating load-displacement curves presenting pop-in, slope changes, or instabilities from curves exhibiting a typical loading path in large nanoindentation datasets. Classification of the curves was achieved with a deep learning model, specifically, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model implemented in Python using TensorFlow and Keras libraries.

In spite of increasing prevalence of diabetes among Kenyans and evidence suggesting Kenyans with diabetes maintain poor glycemic control, no one has examined the role of cultural attitudes, beliefs, and practices in their self-management of diabetes. The purpose of this ethnographic study was to describe diabetes self-management among the Swahili of coastal Kenya, and explore factors that affect diabetes self-management within the context of Swahili culture. Thirty men and women with type 2 diabetes from Lamu town, Kenya, participated in this study.

Advance care planning is critical for persons with chronic kidney disease because they face a shortened lifespan. There is a paucity of reliable and valid measures exploring nephrology nurse perceptions toward advance care planning. This article reports the results of testing the factor structure, reliability, and validity of a newly developed measure of nephrology nurse perceptions toward advance care planning as well as information on nephrology nurses'perceptions on advance care planning.
