Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (ionized gas) is an innovative medical tool for the treatment of infected wounds thanks to its potential to inactivate drug-resistant microorganisms and promote tissue regeneration and vascularization. The low power consumption, compactness, and versatility of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAPP) devices make them an ideal tool for risk mitigation associated with human spaceflights. This work presents results in microgravity on the operability of CAPP and its antimicrobial effect.

Different cell exposure protocols - plasma jet, plasma treated medium, and combinations of plasma-induced electric field and plasma treated medium- have been proposed and assessed to provide new insight on plasma-induced uptake mechanism. Cell culture medium composition and volume are key parameters to achieve an efficient molecular uptake.

ECT consists of increasing the uptake of cytotoxic drugs by means of pulsed electric fields (PEFs) that transiently permeabilise the cell membrane. Still, this tumour treatment includes some drawbacks that are linked to the characteristics of the intense electric pulses (EPs) used.

Given its potential to interact with tissue or cells without a significant temperature increase, NTP appears as a promising approach for the treatment of various diseases including cancer. The aim of our study was to evaluate the interest of NTP both in vitro and in vivo.
