Administrative databases are powerful tools for pediatric research but lack patient-level microbiology results. This study aimed to determine the accuracy of pathogen discharge diagnosis codes for children hospitalized with acute hematogenous musculoskeletal infections (MSKIs). Medical records for 244 children hospitalized with acute hematogenous MSKIs were manually reviewed to determine which bacterial pathogen, if any, was identified for each MSKI based on microbiology results obtained during the hospitalization.

Article Synopsis
  • The use of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) during COVID-19 led to a decrease in various respiratory illnesses but created a build-up of susceptible individuals for future outbreaks.
  • Unlike other respiratory pathogens that rebounded quickly after NPIs, Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) outbreaks have been significantly delayed, with reports of delays over three years in Europe and Asia.
  • Researchers are employing mathematical models to forecast a significant Mp outbreak in the US, highlighting the impact of NPIs and decreasing immunity on the duration of epidemic delays.

Introduction: This study assessed the influence of intrapersonal (one's own emotions) and interpersonal (emotions of others) emotional competence (EC) of informal caregivers on their quality of life (QoL) at the beginning of cancer care.

Methods: Participants completed two questionnaires assessing their intrapersonal and interpersonal EC (S-PEC) as well as their QoL (SF-36) at the beginning of treatments. Multivariate ANCOVA regression analyses were then performed to explore the influence of EC on QoL.

Kawasaki disease (KD), an acute self-limited febrile illness that primarily affects children <5 years old, is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in developed countries, with the potential of leading to coronary artery dilation and coronary artery aneurysms in 25% of untreated patients. This update summarizes relevant clinical data published since the 2017 American Heart Association scientific statement on KD related to diagnosis, cardiac imaging in acute KD treatment, and long-term management. Criteria defining North American patients at high risk for developing coronary artery aneurysms who may benefit from more intensive initial treatment have been published.

Visible-light excitation of a family of bimetallic ruthenium polypyridines with the formula [Ru(tpy)(bpy)(-CN)Ru(py)L] (RuRuL), where L=Cl, NCS, DMAP and ACN, was used to prepare photoinduced mixed-valence (PI-MV) MLCT states as models of the photosynthetic reaction center. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy allowed to monitor photoinduced IVCT bands between 6000 and 11000 cm. Mulliken spin densities resulting from DFT and (TD)DFT computations revealed the modulation of the charge density distribution depending on the ligand substitution pattern.
