The diffusely adhering Escherichia coli (Afa/Dr DAEC) are associated with recurrent urinary tract infections in adults as well as with diarrheal disease in infants. We previously demonstrated that in wild-type strain IH11128, the Dr fimbriae is released in the extracellular medium in response to multiple environmental signals such as temperature, low aeration and rich medium.
