Background: Advance provision of medication abortion, or the prescription of mifepristone and misoprostol before pregnancy occurs, is an unexplored care model aimed at expanding abortion access. We examine motivations for obtaining advance provision from the online telemedicine service, Aid Access, which supports people in the United States.

Methods: Between May and November 2023, we conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 39 people who obtained advance provision between January 2022 and April 2023.

Background: Rete middle cerebral artery (MCA) is a rare anomaly of the intracranial circulation that mimics congenital Moyamoya disease (MMD). Similar to MMD, it is reported almost exclusively in East-Asian ethnicities. Here, we report 13 patients with rete MCA anomaly from a predominantly non-Asian background in the USA.

We present experiments, supported by mechanically detailed simulations, establishing bulk condensation of a hard-bead fluid by a tiny population of orientable motile grains that self-assembles into a moving polarized monolayer. In a quasi-1D geometry two such layers, oppositely aligned, immobilize the condensed nonmotile component. We account for our observations through a continuum theory with a naturally nonreciprocal Cahn-Hilliard structure, whose predicted trends as a function of packing fraction are consistent with our observations.

Background: Exome- or genome-based panels-also known as slices or virtual panels-are now a popular approach that involves comprehensive genomic sequencing while restricting analysis to subsets of genes based on patients' phenotypes. This flexible strategy enables frequent gene updates based on novel disease associations as well as reflexing to analyzing other genes up to the whole exome or genome. With recent improvements addressing limitations associated with virtual panels, the advantages of this approach, relative to static custom-based panels, remain to be systematically characterized.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) can lead to acute ischemic strokes (AIS) via paradoxical embolism; a case study highlights the need for better clinical screening and treatment strategies in affected patients.
  • A systematic review of 102 patients found that AIS due to PAVMs typically occurs in younger individuals (average age 47.4 years) and often involves the middle-cerebral territory, with around 30% experiencing multiple strokes.
  • The study suggests that patients with PAVMs and AIS should be evaluated for hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) and potential venous thromboses to better manage their condition and prevent further strokes.
