Platinum group metals (PGMs) are increasingly recycled from spent automotive catalysts due to their scarcity in nature. Many studies were developed using different leaching reagents in order to achieve greener benefits and reduce environmental pollution. This article reports for the first time direct comparison of leaching reagents on the efficiency of PGMs using microwave (MW) assisted heating.

Endothelial cell (EC) glycocalyx (GCX) shedding due to disturbed blood flow and chemical factors leads to low-density lipoprotein infiltration and reduced nitric oxide synthesis, causing vascular dysfunction and atherosclerosis. This study evaluates a novel therapy combining sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and heparin (heparan sulfate derivative). We hypothesized that heparin/S1P would repair mechanically damaged EC GCX in disturbed flow (DF) regions and restore anti-atherosclerotic mechanotransduction function, addressing cardiovascular disease.

We present a theoretical study of assembling clusters and nanoparticles in space from primordial aggregations of unbound carbon atoms. Geometry optimization and SCC-DFTB dynamics methods are employed to predict carbon clusters, their time evolution and stability. The initial density of the aggregates is found to be of primary importance for the structure of the clusters.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important in the development of modern and green energy technologies with the demand for REEs predicted to grow in the foreseeable future. The importance of REEs lies in their unique physiochemical properties, which cannot be reproduced using other elements. REEs are sourced through mining, with global exploration of additional commercially viable mining sites still ongoing.
