Integration of medicinal chemistry in therapeutic decision-making: A way forward?

Many attempts have been made to integrate medicinal chemistry knowledge into therapeutic decision-making in pharmacy programs across North America. Examples include the use of Structure-Based Therapeutic Evaluations, alignment of medicinal chemistry content with courses in pharmacology, pharmaceutics and pharmacotherapeutics, and team-based or problem-based learning methods. The majority of these approaches indicate that students have greater confidence or comfort with medicinal chemistry, but there remain few cases where an improvement in performance has been measured.

Medicinal chemistry curriculum and pedagogical practices at Canadian pharmacy schools: Towards standardization of practice.

Introduction: Medicinal chemistry instruction in PharmD programs at Canadian universities is considered an important foundational science. However, with few guidelines for the required content most programs have observed a decrease in hours of medicinal chemistry instruction. A Medicinal Chemistry Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed to address these issues nationally and initiated a pan-Canadian environmental scan to better understand the depth and breadth of medicinal chemistry instruction.

"My UC Story": A Qualitative Descriptive Study Describing the Patient Journey for Ulcerative Colitis.

: Personal perspectives of patients are seldomly reported in the literature, most notably their journey to diagnosis. Literature is heavily focused on the patient journey from a healthcare professional's point of view during the treatment process. The objective of this study is to conduct a qualitative study on a video-sharing site, YouTube, to determine if the patient journey from a subjective perspective is truly linear for those who suffer from ulcerative colitis.

Climate change effects on terrestrial parasitic nematodes: Where are the knowledge gaps?

Climate change is expected to affect parasitic nematodes and hence possibly parasite-host dynamics and may have far-reaching consequences for animal health, livestock production, and ecosystem functioning. However, there has been no recent overview of current knowledge to identify how studies could contribute to a better understanding of terrestrial parasitic nematodes under changing climates. Here we screened almost 1,400 papers to review 57 experimental studies on the effects of temperature and moisture on hatching, development, survival, and behaviour of the free-living stages of terrestrial parasitic nematodes with a direct life cycle in birds and terrestrial mammals.

Gut microbiome biogeography in reindeer supersedes millennia of ecological and evolutionary separation.

Ruminants are dependent on their gut microbiomes for nutrient extraction from plant diets. However, knowledge about the composition, diversity, function, and spatial structure of gut microbiomes, especially in wild ruminants, is limited, largely because analysis has been restricted to faeces or the rumen. In two geographically separated reindeer subspecies, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed strong spatial structuring, and pronounced differences in microbial diversity of at least 33 phyla across the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine (including faeces).
