Context: Demoralization is a state of existential distress in patients with advanced illness, typically with coping difficulties, feelings of loss of sense, and purpose in life and despair, among other things. The New Demoralization Scale (DS-II) is an evaluation tool for this syndrome, which has recently been reformulated on a shorter scale.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to obtain a Spanish version of the DS-II and to assess its psychometric properties in advanced cancer patients in Spain and a number of Latin American countries.
Background: Assisted reproductive technology with semen washing can offer a significant reduction in risk of sexual and vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in serodiscordant couples with infected male partner.
Methods: Among couples coming to our centre for reproductive problems from January 2001 to December 2003, we selected 43 couples with seropositive male and seronegative female: 25 couples with HIV-seropositive males, 10 couples with HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-seropositive males and eight couples with HCV-seropositive males. Sperm samples were washed and used for ICSI.
Cells proliferating from human atherosclerotic lesions are resistant to the antiproliferative effect of TGF-beta1, a key factor in wound repair. DNA from human atherosclerotic and restenotic lesions was used to test the hypothesis that microsatellite instability leads to specific loss of the Type II receptor for TGF-beta1 (TbetaR-II), causing acquired resistance to TGF-beta1. High fidelity PCR and restriction analysis was adapted to analyze deletions in an A10 microsatellite within TbetaR-II.

The stimulation of SMC migration by platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) involves the induction of protein kinase C activity. Using immunoblot techniques, we demonstrated that rat aortic SMC express a pattern of PKC isoforms which includes PKC-alpha, delta, epsilon, zeta and eta.
